Grimsley Senior High is the oldest high school in Greensboro North Carolina, however, we are Greensboro’s newest FRC team. We are excited to be joining in the competition this year and hope to create a strong foundation for robotics at Grimsley. The Robotics faculty advisor is Mr. Myron Bryant, who teaches fundamentals of technology. The robotics program has visibly grown throughout the season and we anticipate continued growth in both interest and success in the years to come, as we reach to further the minds of tomorrow with science, engineering, math and technology.

What is a Prion?

A prion is an infectious non-living agent made of protein. The name comes from “Proteinaceous and infection”. Prions are best known as the cause of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE, or Mad Cow disease). Because they are not technically living, they can't be “killed,” and are almost impossible to get rid of. Prions can survive temperatures in excess of 300 degrees Fahrenheit. We picked this name for our team because we want our robot to embody the perseverance and indestructibility of a prion.

Our Robot

A Picture Of Our Robot

Our robot has a simple design - we wanted to make sure that we could have a successful year, but first and foremost we wanted to make sure that we had a working robot. Our simple design also presents the ability to build off of our experiences and look forward to next year. It has two omni-wheels in the front to allow for movement in all directions, and two traction wheels in the rear to ensure that we can make it over the bumps on the playing field. In addition to traction wheel we shortened the wheel base on the chassis for effectively crossing the bump. We constructed a custom double layer electronics board to help control the center of gravity and to free up space in the front for the kicker. The kicker consists of a rotating frame designed to maximize the effects of torque which is created by tension in surgical tubing. We are confident that this robot will finish strong.
