Team Prion

Grimsley High School Robotics, Greensboro, North Carolina

Our Story

In 2008, Sophomore David Pudlo decided to leave his current FRC team at the Greensboro Early College to form a FIRST robotics team at his own high school, Grimsley Senior High. Participating in the First Tech Challenge (FTC) in their first year, the Grimsley Robotics team set a high bar for themselves by going to the World Championships in Atlanta.

The next year, the Grimsley Robotics team doubled in size, allowing them to compete in the First Robotics Challenge(FRC) for the first time. Now going by the name Team Prion, Grimsley Robotics participated in both the FTC and FRC games. Finding their groove, the Grimsley Robotics team was able to place well in FTC, and impressed the judges enough at the FRC competition to earn the Rookie Inspiration Award in their first season.

Now in their third FRC season and their fourth FTC season, Team Prion has been able to field a dedicated team for both competitions for the first time due to their exponential growth rate. Again, generous companies throughout the Triad have pitched in time, talent, and treasure to ensure the continuation of Team Prion for years to come.

Thanks to partnerships with local companies, such as Analog Devices, Rhino Aircraft, and ABCO, our students have experienced mentors from the "real world" helping them learn skills that will carry them into potential careers in math in science. Why Team Prion?

Why a prion? (pronounced: Pree-on) A prion is a small protein that destroys cell tissue, and are very similar to a rouge virus or bacterium. However, unlike a virus or other harmful bacteria, a prion does not contain any DNA or RNA which makes it virtually indestructible. Prions cause all sorts of trouble, including diseases such as the "Mad Cow" disease.

Grimsley Robotics chose the name "Team Prion" because we want our robot to emulate a prion. We want our robot to have the indestructability of a prion, and we want it to wreak havoc on the playing field, destroying everything in its path. Like a prion, we are still a recent discovery, and just waiting to uncover our full potential.
